My flight was supposed to leave at 11:00 a.m. It was delayed which meant that I was going to miss my connecting flight in Detroit. Instead, Northwest offered to pay for me to fly directly to Cleveland on Continental.
I’m not complaining, it’s just that my flight now leaves at 1:40 p.m. and I had to go through special TSA screening because of the airline change. I’ve done that once before, after being upgraded to first class. They pat ya down, swab your luggage for explosives and then let you go.
This was a bit different. You go into this little x-ray chamber and you hear a robotic voice announce that air is going to be dispensed. Think the Marilyn Monroe air vent scene, except a lot less sexy. This poor woman in her late 60’s was so terrified. She complained at how horrible she was being treated, and I truly felt for her, but alas our apathy in giving up our basic freedoms for security is to blame.
So here I sit, with about 40 minutes to go until liftoff. Hopefully there won’t be any other delays. I packed my Red Sox jersey and I don’t want to miss this game!
It looks like I will be going from Cleveland to Cincinnati this week as well, as I am hoping the cleanout of our old Westlake office goes quickly.

Two points of convergence…and an “Oh, how things have changed” realization.
in ‘95, I was working on “Mrs. Winterbourne” in Toronto. We were going to finish the movie with a week in Boston, so before starting the shoot in Toronto, a few of us went to have a look at the Boston locations. We finished on a Sunday morning and everybody flew back to Toronto.
Since I didn’t have to do anything until Monday morning, I decided to take a later flight and catch the Red Sox afternoon game. I paid the concierge at the hotel an obscene amount of money for tickets and was delighted to realize that I was in the front row on the first base side right at the edge of the net behind home plate. A wall to put my beer and hot dogs on and a net to keep me from getting beaned. Yay.
So anyway, this was a totally inconsequential game against Kansas City and but it turned into a great game. Tied into the top of the 8th inning, I decided there might be extra innings and I wasn’t going to leave before the end. I called Air Canada on my cell phone and asked could I change to a later flight and they said “No Problem”.
Staid til the Red Sox won with a homer in the bottom of the 11th. No problems with security or customs at the airport. Damn I miss those days. Hey, did I say you could play on my lawn?
If your price was obscene for the tickets back ten years ago, they probably want a first born, now.
