Confess! Confess! CONFESS!

Oh Noes! It’s a Random Update!

Posted by Kate

I finally have a chance to breathe, before I get swept away in the flood that is my life at the moment. What can I say? I’ve been a busy beaver, hence why the posts this November have slacked off.

So, what’s new you ask? Well, just because I like you, I’ll tell you.

I’m buying a house. It was a rather whirlwind thing. I called a realtor about renting a house, and for the prices of renting a house, he said I could buy one. So we went looking and found a cute little house in the town in which I grew up. So far things are progressing nicely, but it does mean that I do have to start packing, tie up loose ends here, register Alexis for another elementary school and whatever else comes with moving to my own abode.

I’m crossing my fingers, knocking on wood and not stepping under any ladders hoping that everything goes smoothly. Ultimately, I would still like to head down south in a few years, where my money is going to go a lot further, but there is no harm in making an investment while my kids get a little older. They’ll have a yard, we’ll all have some privacy (and ample parking) and at the end of the day, when I sell the house, I’ll have money for a down payment on a house down in the land where Bbq is king.

What else? My office is shutting down in May. Apparently in our quest for world domination, we are consolidating and minimizing our expenses to improve our bottom line. While I’ll enjoy sending out email in my pajamas, I think I will miss the social interaction that I was initially seeking when I first looked for a job back almost 6 years ago.

I will be doing some travelling in the coming months to Reston, VA, probably West Conshohocken, PA,  and perhaps other locations to help close offices that don’t have admins. I’m actually looking forward to it, because it gets me out of Connecticut for a few days and I can put one more pushpin in a place that I’ve been able to visit.

I’ve been guest posting for Peter Hodges while he’s been busy and away for work. Feel free to visit over there if you’ve got nothing better to do.

I will be adding a new podcast today as well, and I’m trying to come up with some generic demos for my voice work.

Oh well, I guess it’s back to the grind stone. So, what’s new with you?

  1. Snave Said,

Kate, your NE investment, BBQ retirement scheme is also why I’m here in Boston. I have a bunch of equity in a 2 bedroom, 1000 sq ft house on 1/4 acre in a desireable location, and a job that pays 30% more than a comparable job in Texas. Maxing out retirement contributions up here effectively gives me 30% more than I could contribute down south, so I make hay when the snow falls. But once I can quit the rat race, this rat will race back to Texas, where I’ll be able to live less expensively. “Your BBQ may vary.”

At least, those are the plans, and as we know, rat plans can “gang aft agley”. Good luck on your own plans, may they work better than you expect!

    “NE Investment, BBQ retirement scheme”

I LOVE that. In fact, that’s what I’m going to call it going forward. The Dallas area was on my possible list, where abouts in Texas are you considering?

Man, I hope your house is like right outside of Boston. Anywhere between 290 in Worcester and especially in the 495 loop, housing prices are still too high for me. I hope your investment pays off!

  3. Snave Said,

Houston is the desired location. Lots and lots of friends still there, and I spent 16 years there previously, so the environs are known. And I never had to shovel snow there!

I’m at the norther intersection of 93 and 95, and yes, the prices are outrageous. It was the least expensive 1-story nice-neighborhood with some yard. I also got lucky and got some great neighbors.

I didn’t know it was an investment when I got it. I just needed a place to live, and I didn’t want to pay PMI, so I had to put 20% down. Of course, with the sub-Prime fiasco, the current value is down, but I’m expecting it will go up again. I still have a few more years up here in Boston, so I have time.
