Not a Good Start to the School Year…

Posted by Kate

I don’t know what to make of it. I was informed today that one of my son’s classes was left unsupervised. During that time, a few kids decided to beat the crap out of someone they considered a ’snitch’. The pushed the poor boy to the floor and started kicking him.

I don’t know at this point if William knew he was out-numbered and couldn’t intervene, or if his first instinct was to get a teacher, but he ran from the room and grabbed the closest adult who then broke up the fight.

While I am proud of him for trying to fix the situation the only way he knew how, this has left him vunerable to the same prosecution that had befallen the first victim.

So as you can see, with school only one month in session, things are not going so well.

Hopefully with a little parental intervention, and some academic punishment for the bullying students, William won’t end up curled up in the fetal position while being kicked by his fellow students.

If he does end up eating dirt, by God, I’ll take this up with the authorities. While it’s happened since the first school bell rang, children should not be subjected to this behavior.

Parents need to step-up and take responsibility for raising their children not to do this kind of thing from a very early age. Those who don’t, are neglecting their offspring.

This is what I fear is a spiraling epidemic in our country that is currently going unnoticed. Almost any time I am in a public place (which isn’t often) and there is a child misbehaving, the parents are either nowhere to be found or just don’t care.

Worse yet, if an outsider with decent judgment suggests that the parent should discipline their child, parents these days go off on the stranger for trying to tell them how to raise their kids.

I blame it on young women these days having very few idols to look up to in their culture.

  2. Russ Said,

This is like an episode of Oz…

  3. Chris Said,

The parallels between the social structure in prisons and schools too many for my tastes.

My boy tends to draw that sort of unwanted attention. He’s very different than most boys his age. Near the start of the year he was jumped by two big Hispanic boys while riding the bus. Two weeks later he converted one of the boys into a devout Christian. Now they sit together and talk theology. I tell you, he is an odd bird, that one.

Girls tend to use more psychological tactics. Their goal is to ostracize the victim and reduce their self worth. It is easy to understand why school authorities should break up a fight, but adults have more trouble sorting real psychological abuse from mere whiners.

I am frustrated because I have no solutions. Kids that rely on adults to administer justice are considered craven, which calls down more fury. However, our family ethics forbid us from creating our own justice. Rather, we must all rely on the proper authorities. Yet I know bullies will always find a way to wander beyond adult supervision.

Thanks for sharing. My prayers are with you & William.

    That’s fucked up.

    Sorry, but it is.

This whole anti-snitch thing is ridiculous.

  5. Pete Said,

Will needs to find his own code of honor. I was raised such that the only thing I could have done would have been to intervene. Will made his choice, but I fear that now he’ll have to back that up with his fists.
