In the Event of an Alien Landing

Author: Kate  //  Category: Fluff

It’s interesting to people watch, especially in moments of set-up duress. Take this video for instance.

An ‘alien ship’ crash lands in a serene field. Bystanders stop to investigate and get the surprise of their lives.

The one thing I don’t get, is why people would touch something that was supposed to come from outer space! While I might get close enough to be vaporized should the visitor turn hostile, I wouldn’t touch the damn thing until I was invited!

Jeez!

Thank you for the link, Gary. :)

How Not To Do A Podcast

Author: Kate  //  Category: Fluff, Life, Musings, Pete's Podcasts, Wootercakes!, Writing Samples

Doing this for awhile, I’ve decided to put out a little ’self help’ podcast on how not to do a podcast. I’ve compiled a few outtakes and examples of what not to do to impress your readers.

Enjoy.

Thanks to a very attentive Andy who noticed the link was broken.

Going insane

Author: Kate  //  Category: Life

I am so sorry for the lack of posts in the last few days, I’ve just been so busy that I haven’t had time to sit and write! I’ve been moving furniture, cleaning out closets, submitting voice work proposals, working on podcasts for Pete, taking care of my dad and my kids and tending to my regular full time job as an administrative assistant.

Now that I’ve finally caught up on all fronts, I’m all yours.

Soooooo, what do you want to talk about? Mmmm?

Plays for power have always been brutal in the empire, especially in your own family.

Me at 17

In the spirit of John Scalzi’s picture on his aol site, I have decided to reminisce a little bit as well. This was my senior picture back in 1995. Zomg, I was teh pretties! I need to become teh pretties again! This would require me to lose weight and like get that peaches and cream complexion to return. I guess I’ll need to slather on the sunscreen.

Regardless, post some pictures of your high school daze and link them here!

What It Means to Be a Mother

Author: Kate  //  Category: Life

Your heart aches when you can’t magically take away the pain of a sore throat or calm the chills that a fever brings. My daughter is resting on the couch with a moderate fever, and I’ve given her all the medicine I can to help bring it under control. She tends to vomit when she’s overly emotional, so we’ve practiced slowly breathing in and out. Cracking a shaky smile, she looks up from her tepid bath and remarks, ”I like breathing like this, I’m using the Force from Star Wars. That’s going to help me get better.” God, I wish I were still a kid sometimes.

I can only smile back at her and encourage her.

I thought it would get easier with each child; you know, handling this kind of stuff. Yet, every malady, every scrape, and every sickness does not become ‘old hat’. I thought I’d become tougher when my second child was born; impervious after the third came into my life. Yet, here I am.

Fretting.

I am absolutely shaken to the core when the ear thermometer registers anything over 101. Panic starts to set in even after my 11th year at this. I am better at wearing that stoic mask, trying to tell jokes to make my children smile, even as my thoughts are racing a mile a minute as to plan the next step.

I guess as each day goes on I am still learning what it truly means to be a mother, even after a decade of experience.  Part of me thinks that even when my children leave the nest, the lessons will continue.

Bring it on.

Scalzi’s Weekend Assignment #180: Build a Bumper Sticker

For this Weekend Assignment I thought we’d do something easy. Because it’s August, and that’s just the wrong month to think:

Weekend Assignment #180: Go to this bumper sticker generator, and create a bumper sticker. Then post it in your journal. The generator page gives you a number of options to play with, so you should be able to have fun with it. Naturally, keep it reasonably clean; I have to link to it, after all.

Extra Credit:
How many bumper stickers does your car have in real life?

No bumperstickers although I have one window decal  supporting the Boston Red Sox. I did have one of those nifty broken window baseballs with the Red Sox logo on it, but it fell off in the automatic carwash. /cry

“It’s a, it’s a, it’s a, it’s a…”

Cool remix from the movie The Fifth Element sent along by my super cool sister in geekihood, Lisa. Needless to say, this flick goes down as one of my favorite science fiction movies of all time.

Your Monday (Yeah, I know it’s Tuesday already) Photo Shoot: 2003

Author: Kate  //  Category: Assignments, Fluff, Life

Scalzi’s Monday Photo Shoot: Find a picture from 2003 and post it. Any picture is fine; it just has to be from the now-oh-so-distant year of two thousand aught-three. Surely you have pictures from then? Yes?

I don’t think I had a camera during 2003. Perhaps it was broken but this is the only picture I could find. It happens to be excruciatingly cute, so be prepared! Also, if you’re allergic to bees, you might want to have some Benadryl near by.

This is Alexis at Halloween.
